Weird title for a good reason. So many people are on mobile devices you have half of their attention and they need to reach you with a click of a thumb.
A modern design approach for a modern era
Did you know that the average attention span is about eight seconds? In other words, you have a matter of moments to actually keep someone interested in your video. Thanks to today’s technology, they can easily click a button and move on to something else. In other words, you have to assume that anyone who watches your video online is doing so with only one eye and one thumb. Their other eye is on something else vying for their attention and their thumb is on the mouse button, ready to move on.
Television and movie producers understand this. Just watch the first five minutes of a show like Breaking Bad to see what we mean here. Any action film or show will start out right in the middle of that action. That’s the hook. It’s the way media is able to capture people’s attention and hold onto it.
Your audience’s attention span is short, you better grab their attention fast.
You have to understand the same thing when you make marketing videos for your company. It’s not about talking about your company. It’s about storytelling and weaving a story in a way to capture and hold attention. People may click on your video with one eye and one thumb, but your goal in short order is to get the attention of two eyes and no thumbs.
How do you do this? You make something different. You make something so interesting that they simply cannot click away. You use a hook to grab their attention and you use storytelling to keep it. If you don’t do this, then people will likely click to something else and your business will never even have a chance. How do you accomplish this? It’s all about doing something that is unique and different from any other video that has been done before.
That does mean watching other videos to see what has been done and what hasn’t, what has been successful and what has not.
